BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The department of English has been a part of the college since its inception in 1875. It is the only department that reaches out to every undergraduate student in the college.  Postgraduate program was started way back in 1956 and undergraduate program in 1972. The department has consistently excelled in curricular and co-curricular activities as evidenced from the list of ranks and other distinctions.  The department can boast of having had eminent scholars, linguists, writers and critics such as L.V. Ramaswamy Iyer, Prof. Madhukar Rao, Prof. B. Hridayakumari, Prof. T.R. Mararar, Prof. T. Ramachandran, Dr. T.K. Ramachandran and Prof. P. Vijayalakshmi as its faculty.

The department believes that the aim of education is to provide qualitative behavior modification and to cultivate independent thinking. With a view to realizing the aforesaid goals, the department conceives and implements various programs firmly rooted in the pedagogical discourse of constructivism. The department follows and transacts the curriculum decided by the university from time to time. In order to assure optimal academic performance, the department organizes two internal examinations every semester in addition to the mandatory assignments and seminars.

In terms of infrastructure the department has a well stocked library, spacious classrooms, a smart classroom, computers and LCD projectors. The facilities and devices are fruitfully made use of by teachers in curricular transaction.
