Brief History of the Department
The Department of Zoology came into existence in the year 1925. BSc degree course was started in 1935 and M.Sc course in 1959. Entomology is the area of specialization for M.Sc .At present there are eight faculty members .The departmental Library is well stocked with books and journals in the biological field .Department of Zoology was raised to the status of research Center in 1997 and a research laboratory has established accordingly. In 2011 the department came under the sponsorship of DST-FIST
The Zoology museum was established in 1874 and is considered to be one of the 50 international museums in the world .It is classified as a Natural History Museum and it has been listed in the data bank of K G Saur Verlag Gmbh &Co, Germany under ‘Museum of the world’. At present it holds more than 1500 specimens including rare items like Sloth Bear, Llama, Ostrich, King Cobra, Heloderma, Acipensor, Armadillo, Coral world, different kinds of birds, skeletons of animals and precious geological collections .Though the Museum is of academic interest, it is open to visitors on request.
